IDAMHC APRIL PLAYDAY
by Arlea Alvarez

The April 13th IDAMHC peer coaching and play day at Shawnda Kasma’s arena in Parma drew an enormous crowd eager to learn or refine their techniques and the performance of their horse.

Following each training session we were able to practice what we learned in the judged classes. Prior to our scrumptious potluck lunch was game time, which included in-hand pole bending, driving pole bending, in-hand rings, and driving rings

The afternoon was devoted to driving pointers for everyone from beginners to advanced drivers. There was an American Carriage Driving Judge who worked with individuals on advanced instructions while the beginners concentrated on learning more about control while driving. Also included was a session for beginner’s harnessing and ground driving.

There was good weather, great people and food, plus Shawnda’s gracious hospitality. What a fabulous day…even the horses were excited about this event!

ISHSA BEGINNERS CLINIC
by Arlea Alvarez

The April 26th ISHSA Beginners Training Clinic covered such topics as the Unwritten Rules of the Horse Show, Basic Show Terminology, the difference between Halter and Showmanship, accurately completing your show entry forms - per horse/handler, ask questions when walking a course, pay attention to your judge during the class.

A few of the Unwritten Rules of the Horse Show are:
Don’t block the in and out gate, don’t follow too close in class, be mindful of the miniature horses, miniature handlers be mindful of standard horses and announce your approach please, don’t cut other horses off when passing, if you are having trouble with your horse it is acceptable to pull your horse into the center of the arena, but you must stand quietly or possibly ask to be excused.

Halter vs Showmanship:

Halter is judged on horse’s way of travel and conformation.
Showmanship: Exhibitor is judged on how well they present him/herself and the horse.
Copies of the handouts on Halter vs. Showmanship, Basic Show Terminology and Unwritten Rules of the Horse Show will be disseminated at our next club meeting, June 18, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at Sunrise
